@Frogz I can make artwork just using the picture tubes from PSP 7. It was one the reasons I chose it over PhotoShop when I got to test both during some now-outdated html design courses.

Great video!... I learned to use Macs in a Mac Classic, when Photoshop and Freehand don't exist or was too expensive. LC3 was in the mayor league. It's amazing to view in retrospective how we was worked in this (now) precarious machines.

I guess when I was around 10, my dad brought back this kind of Mac from his job where he was a graphic designer (it was Mac OS7 or so, with something like 10 3.5" floppy disks to install the OS). That's the first ever computer that I touched. But then at school they started some computer teaching on Windows... 3.1. That was crazy for me to switch from the Mac with windows and almost everything that we know today, to a PC that starts on DOS. And I learned Photoshop from this version 1.0 and I still some of the things I learned at that time. We also had Adobe Dimension, the first ever 3D software that I knew, using sketches made in Adobe Illustrator and imported to Dimension. My brother went much further than that recreating a frame b frame animation in 3D of the Millenium Falcon escape from Hoth with Adobe Dimension. It was taking so long for each frame to render with colors and shadows (no drop shadows, just simple 3d shadows that show the volume of the object with a single source of light). Then all frames where compiled in a MOV file and some editing was done ( I can't remember on which software, but maybe directly in Quicktime) to add sound effects. Overall there is a movie somewhere with some of the asteroid field, camera movements (but done without a camera so all objects where moved in the 3D space at calculated coordinates)... done on this old Mac. I'd love to find the backup of those files. I think I saw them a few years ago but I don't know where they are now.

I cant belive Sam mentioned Marathon. That was the first game I ever played. Of course I played it WELL after its release date. I was born in 99 and played it probably about 05. And I think it was released in 94. So yes, I was late to the party but that was the game that made me love videogames and is still one of my favorite games of all time. And to hear Sam mention it made my entire fukin day.

This kind of has me curious. What would the best still render you could achieve using a $600 new laptop on Blender? And what would be the best animated render you could pull off? That could be a fun one. But dang, that old Mac sure does bring back memories, as does the old Photoshop. I am so glad I started on 4.0......

Dude when he selected a custom filter, did it actually just present him with the ability to input constants for a _custom 5x5 convolution kernel?_ Who tf using this software would even know what that _is_, let alone how to actually put the right numbers in to get what they want?? These devs were on that new shit bruv

The custom filter is for setting a custom kernel that can be used to perform convolution with the image. With this you can do edge detection, blurring, improve sharpness, etc! Pretty cool stuff!

Some of us had to apply GOOD ideas in 1990... We created some pretty great stuff, you have likely seen in print on the air. Don't get spoiled by modern HW and SW. Creativity is where it is at, and the ability to make do with what you have is priceless!

  • PelDaddy

Layers were added in PS 2.5. We had to suffer through saving a billion versions before that. (Yep, been there; it was brutal since saving a 20MB file would take about 2-3 mins on a state-of-the-art HD.) I am one of the few guys that lived this and is still in the industry.

  • PelDaddy

I was one of those guys using computers for VFX before this... 1989 PS beta, and then 1990-- Mac II fx, baby. I lived this. I was fit back then.... I would do push ups every time a PS progress bar came up... I was VERY fit! Some of us actually were doing VFX back then. Yep, no PEN TOOL in photoshop... It took a long time for it to mature. NO LAYER until 2.5, IIRC.

8:00 this is a custom filter matrix that you can fill in, basically telling the computer how to calculate the new pixel (and it's neighbour) base on the matrix. I learnt about it in Computer Graphic class few years ago, never would imagine that it would become useful now that we have traveled back in time to use the original PTS.

The LC 475 was not anywhere close to a top of the line machine even at the time! Pro designers on macs in 1993 used Quadras and IIgs machines. The LC line was a consumer grade, "affordable" mac,, much closer to the mac mini today. You did great work with that old beast!

I'm so glad Linus finally gets to experience the pain of retro computer (espically Mac) enthusiasts get when trying to get files to and from old computers. The science elf has a great video about the agony of file converters, and action retro spoke of us ultimate bridge machine. Mac's are espically annoying because of proprietary file formats that can't be read by windows. Even modern Mac os can read ntfs, why can't windows read hfs or apfs?

NEW CLiP: You guys talk a lot about being a company with fast turnaround on projects I wonder if you could dive into Music Videos, I know it might be tough with Music copyrights but even if you just broke down ridiculous scenes. Look up Old videos like late nineties Diddy, boy bands and their adventures in green screen, up to modern videos which I feel have really great effects for the timeframe they’re done in (Nas X is huge on it love him or hate him). Not necessarily an entirely new series but a great and bad CGI music video edition. Wu Tang Clan videos were wild as well back in their time.
